Origins
Coachella started in October of 1999 with Rage Against the Machine and Beck as some of the major performers. With around 25,000 attendees and 100-degree weather, the event was a huge financial loss for the organizers of Goldenvoice. Even so, Coachella debuted again in April of 2001 after replanning, and had Jane’s Addiction as the major performer. Now Coachella is hosted year after year, bringing entertainment to over 125,000 attendees for two full weekends.
EDM Artists

While there are other genres played at Coachella such as rock, hip-hop, and pop, EDM still remains the dominant genre. Some notable electronic artists include Daft Punk, Disco Lines, Basement Jaxx, Mau P, Zedd, Parcels, and more. Daft Punk in particular revolutionized stage production for EDM artists by introducing the pyramid set. It influenced them to incorporate more complex structures into their shows, and experiment with stage layouts.
